German automotive industry’s record investments in research and development

Wissmann:Spirit of innovation secures jobs in Germany
Berlin, 26December 2013.             The German automotive industry has set a new record for its expenditure on research and development for the fourth time in succession. In 2012 manufacturersand suppliers spent a total of 23.5 billion euro (including external expenditure). That represents a rise of nearly6 per cent compared with last year.
This meansthat the automotive industry accounts foraround one third of all industrial research investments in Germany. Matthias Wissmann, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), said, "No other sector invests as much in research and development.Our manufacturers and suppliers are the number one drivers of innovation. We also expect an increase in investment in research and development during the current year, as our companies are spending considerable amounts on electric mobility and connectivity.Our manufacturers and suppliers know that the spirit of innovation is the key to long-term success and secures jobs in Germany.”
These latestR&D data are based on a survey by the "Stifterverband” (the business community's innovation agency for the German science system). According to the figures, employment has also risen at the companies’ research and development departments. In all, 93,500 peopleare employed in this field within the automotive industry. This puts the automotive industry’s proportion of all R&D engineers in the country (367,400 employees) at one quarter. Wissmann stated, "We are delighted that the number of employees at the researchand development departments in the German automotive industry has climbed by 3 per cent. That is an encouraging sign for Germany as a location for innovation.”
Around halfof all R&D spending flowed into environmental technologies, Wissmann added. Work was continuing on a broad front to advance fuel-saving drive trains – ranging from the clean diesel and the direct injection petrol engine to plug-in hybrids, purely electric vehicles,hydrogen power and fuel cells. "In so doing, the manufacturers and suppliers are making a valuable contribution to reducing CO2emissions. Today we already have 585 models on offer that require less than 5 litres of fuel to travel 100 kilometers. Two years ago we didn’t even have half that number. And 62 models from our manufacturers consume less than 4 liters,” the VDA president emphasised.
VDAis testing ubitricity street light charging for EVs in central Berlin
Berlin,19. December 2013 - The German Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA) will be testing the ubitricity charging infrastructure system with a street light charging point on its front door step in central Berlin. The system socket integrated in a street light onMarkgrafenstraße was officially opened for operation today by VDA Managing Director Dr. Ulrich Eichhorn and ubitricity Managing Directors Knut Hechtfischer, Dr. Frank Pawlitschek and Dr. Rupert Stützle.
"Bythe end of next year, German automobile manufacturers will introduce 16 new electrified series models. Demand is rising notably. It is key to now support this broad supply by a swift roll-out of charging infrastructure. ubitricity can importantly contributeto this with its infrastructure system including street light charging points," VDA CTO Dr. Eichhorn explains his decision to take part in the technology test of the Berlin-based start-up.
"EVusers need a simple and widespread charging infrastructure", Dr. Rupert Stützle, ubitricity CTO, highlights. "We are very excited to be working with VDA".
ubitricityis cooperating with market leading partners in the development of an infrastructure solution reducing infrastructure costs for EVs by up to 90%. The simple ubitricity system socket can be installed anywhere EV users chose to park their car – at home, at workor at on-street charging spots. Its compact size allows for efficient integration in street lights. The ubitricity infrastructure system relies on mobile metering technology. This reduces both initial investment and installation costs of infrastructure installationsand monthly rates for operation and billing. Domestic and international field testing is on-going since 2012. The Berlin technology test is an important milestone to ubitricity with a view of the up-coming commercial release in late 2014.
